Showmanship allows a handler to show a horse "in hand". Excessive speed (above medium trot) does not allow a handler to run along side the horse to show it in hand; therefore, only standing, walking and some trotting horses are appropriate for showmanship. Most gaited-breed specific gaits are done at speed and therefore are not appropriate for showmanship.
